The padding underneath rugs

The padding underneath rugs will play several roles. The following are some of the benefits of having rug pads in place:

1. Prolong the life of your rug

If you have uneven floor, then installing a thick pad will level the peaks. This will make the rugs last for a long period of time because the peaks will not press too hard on the rugs. Among the most harmful elements on Oriental rug is grit. Raising your rug through the help of the pads will prevent dirt from entering your rug which will result in abrasion action.

2. Protect your floors

A poor quality underlining on your carpet can prevent the floor from breathing. If you have hardwood, the poor underling can accelerate the oxidation of vanish used on the hardwood floor.

3. Keep your carpet in place

Carpets which will keep moving around will be more susceptible to damage. A carpet with padding will shift around less. It is also easier when it comes to vacuuming. The cushion will make the rug more comfortable when stepping on it.

Types of Padding and Non-Skid

Carpet to Hard floor

The type of pad used in this case if thicker. It is made out of heavy gauge rubber. The rubber is stamped with treads. They provide both cushion and traction. The rubber part will be placed on the floor while the grooved side will face the carpet. It was originally made out of jute, but nowadays recycled fibers can be used to make it. It is among the best products in the market. If you have radiant heating, then it is better for you to confirm with your padding professional whether the padding can work for you. The pads are heavy, hence they need to be cut using grade carpet knife. The pads are made having peaks and valleys on one side. The peaks and valleys are very helpful in trapping grit, increasing cushion and providing traction.

The pad is thicker. It is much softer when compared to carpet to hard floor pad. It is not used with oriental rugs; it is applied with wall to wall. If you have radiant heat, it is a safe alternative you can opt for. The padding has no traction on the back. In order to keep things in place, you can use it with heavy furniture.

“Waffle” Pad

Its main purpose is no skid. It will provide minimum cushion as well as providing outstanding traction. It is ideal for thin rugs, which are supposed to settle close to the floor. If you have no door clearance, then the pad can work well for you. You should be careful of inexpensive brands available which tend to stick to the back of the rugs if not replaced in good time

Carpet to Carpet

This is a thin felt which is not more than 1/8th inch. It is sticky on both sides hence helps in keeping an oriental rug in place. It is used on top of wall to wall carpeting. If you wilI like to change the location of your rug, then you should be careful because the adhesive will not come out easily.

Moisture barrier padding

Some carpet sales people often recommend a moisture barrier pad to any customer who visits their stores- reason; they want to sale & make profits. These barrier pads are more expensive compared to a standard Rebond type padding. Although it may be good for some homeowners under certain circumstances to have moisture barrier pads, many others are often misled into believing that these pads can actually do more than what they are designed to do. For instance;

Installing carpet over hardwood floors

Some people believe that when you install a moisture barrier pad & carpet on top of your hardwood floor, the barrier pad will protect the floor from being ruined by any spills. It should however be noted that if a large amount of liquid is spilled, it will soak through the carpet and then spread on top of the barrier pad. Also, if some spills fall next to the pad seams or even next to the walls it can get below the pad and get trapped there. This can seriously damage the hardwood floor and may not even be discovered until the carpet & the pad are removed.

Some claim that if you seal the pad seams with a duct tape, it will prevent the liquids from soaking through. From my experience, water or any other form of moisture will always find a way of soaking through any barrier and the damage it will cause is serious if trapped underneath with no means of evaporating.

Instead of using a moisture barrier go for a regular pad because incase the spills get underneath, they will easily evaporate though it and hence avoid damaging the floor.

Moisture padding for pet accidents

51ELl35zP9LSome people believe that a moisture barrier pad can ease your cleaning of pet urine & accidents and therefore reduce odors. You should however remember that any liquid soaked through the carpet will definitely spread out on top of the moisture padding. This makes it more difficult to clean the pet urine or spill. The urine/ spill will just dry on top of the pad and every time you clean the carpet, you will reactivate the dried urine on top of the barrier and this will only magnify the odor.

Some say that a moisture barrier pad prevents spills from soaking into the pad

Although this is true, it is not really beneficial in any way. This is because when a carpet is cleaned, it does not suck up the spills that have dried on top of the barrier pad.

Beyond the moisture pad

Some homeowners spend a lot of money on specialty pads with the hope of getting their expected benefits only to end up being disappointed. Generally, I do not recommend the use of any specialty pads because I think their benefits are limited, they are overpriced and they can even cause more problems.

There are some carpet manufactures who offer a carpet warranty extension to customers who buy their specialty pads. Many of the homeowners do not file warranty claims on their carpets and that is why it is not really worth the additional expense. I basically do not advise one to buy any padding that increases the warranty limits of the new carpet. If you want to save money and at the same time enjoy the benefits of an effective padding, then go for a good quality Rebond type of padding with at least 6 – 8 pound density.

Note that, the most important factors when buying a new carpet are; choose the right carpet and the right pad from a reputable dealer and then have it installed by a qualified person.

Choosing the right size rug pad

If you will like to preserve the life of your rug, then you need a rug pad. A rug pad will play a great role in reducing slippage of your rug. It will also help in prolonging the lifespan of your rug. The pad will protect the rug against everyday wearing. With a rug pad in place you will have a soft and supportive foundation which will keep your rug in place. You can as well cut most rug pads with scissors for you to achieve a perfect match for your rug.

Choosing the right size rug pad

rug-pad-1The right rug pad should be a bit smaller in size when compared to the size of the rug. When the rug pad is slightly smaller than the rug, then the rug will gently taper to the flow at the edges. This will prevent trip hazard. The trip hazard can be caused when a heel of the shoe catches the edge of the rug. The smaller size will also prevent premature wear and curling at the edge of the rug when people will be walking on it. Another reason why the rug pad should be slightly smaller is to conceal the edge of the pad.

It is easy to determine the size of your rug pad. It should be two inches shorter than your rug on all four sides. The rug pad should be two inches less on each dimension. This is necessary for you to have a perfect fitting rug pad.

Benefits of using a rug pad

There are many benefits you will enjoy after you decide to use a rug pad. For example, you will enjoy the following benefits:

Reduces the wear and tear on the rug

If you will like to achieve long life out of your rug, then you need to buy a rug pad. The pad will protect the rug against wear and tear which will make it serve you for a long period of time.

Helps to absorb the impact of feet and noise

You will not be bored with unnecessary noise in your house when people will be walking. The rug pad will absorb the noise hence making your home a good place to concentrate in different activities. If you had installed it in an office, the office will be very conducive for you to work.

Makes vacuuming the rug easierimages

The rug pad will raise the rug for easy vacuuming. It makes it easy for the vacuuming process to get rid of most of the dirt from the rug.

Protects the flooring against wear

Your flooring will not be subject to scratches which can affect their lifespan. The pad is made to cushion them against any damage.

Adds a layer of cushion between your feet and the hard floor

Your feet will feel comfortable when walking on the floor.

Tips

If you have a rug over carpet, then you need to go for thick polyester fabric coated adhesive pads. This is necessary because they will prevent darker color rugs from bleeding to the carpet.

A pad with nonslip coating on one side will do well when placed on hardwood, laminate or any other hard surface. The nonslip slip should face the hard surface so that it will reduce slippage.

Rug Pads Benefits

Thinking about putting in new rugs, especially ones that you’ll be putting over hardwood flooring? Then you’ll need to think about buying rug pads as well. Rug pads are great because they hold those slippery rugs in place and add a touch of softness to your floor.

Benefts of Rug Pads

279995_300It’s unthinkable to invest in area rugs that you’ll be installing on tiles or hardwood flooring without investing in rug pads. It’s a necessity because without it, your new precious rug may cause accidents such as slipping or someone having the rug sweep them off their feet. This is especially true for those rugs that have felt or very slippery bottoms.

How does a rug pad work? It’s designed to hold your rug in place using a non-slip, gentle adhesive that connects your rug to the floor securely. Rug pads can invariably extend your rug’s life span because they come between your rug and the dust and dirt on the floor. Additionally, rug pads add a touch of appeal when you decide to put the rug in a living space. You can use your rug as a yoga mat if you put in rug pads underneath.

Rug Pads Features

The best rug pads are the ones that are highly resistant to mold and bacteria. You’ll be able to vacuum your rug better when using rug pads. They are very easy to cut according to proportions, and they are quick to install and easy to clean.

In cleaning your rug pads, all you need are some warm water and a mild soap. The pads with a polyester interior coated with vinyl is great in securing your precious rug.

What if you’re not worried about slipping? Rug pads are still beneficial because they make rug cleaning easier and extends its life for a far longer time.

Ordering Rug Pads

padrollWhen shopping for rug pads, choose the one that’s a size smaller than your area rug in order for it to look invisible when placed underneath. If you can’t find one that’s an exact fit for your new rug, then you can simply look around and choose the closest size, and cut it accordingly.

If you have a number of small rugs or runners, then you can just buy a large rug pad and cut them down to size to fit all of them. Doing this can save you both time and money as long as it’s done properly. Those who wish for a one-size-fits-one-rug approach may order additional rug pads along with the area rugs they purchase. There’s no more need for second-guessing the size because the rug pads are a perfect fit and won’t bother you while you install the rug.

Rug Pads Cost

The cost of rug pads depend on where you plan to purchase them. If you want a general idea, then most high-quality rug pads will be at around a dollar per square foot. While this may seem to be expensive, think of all the benefits a rug pad can provide. Rug pads can save you money in the long run by making your rug last for a longer time.

Moisture Proof Carpet Pad

d8e937953ed0a02a33f7c01d8c985ac2Moisture problems are common and can cause a big headache. For this reason, as you prepare to purchase a new carpet for your home, it is important that you also consider investing in a quality carpet pad. A carpet pad is simply a layer of thick foam that is placed between the floor and the carpet. And just like area rugs, they come in different qualities, sizes and prices.

One of the trendiest pads today that helps in curbing moisture spillage is the pet proof or moisture proof carpet pad. This is a rug pad that is specially created to deflect urine and any other form of moisture that is capable of absorbing through your carpet and into the subfloor. It is worth noting that pet proof rugs are made of high-quality materials so that they can serve their purpose adequately, and that they are relatively expensive compared to the regular carpet padding.

So, is it worth your investment?

Animal urine (dogs to be precise) is among the most common moisture problems that homeowners encounter. Whenever moisture gets into your carpet, it has to go somewhere, and that is where pet proof padding comes in. Although the pad does not get rid of the urine or other forms of moisture, it allows it to pool on top of it instead of penetrating to the floor. However, if you don’t get the urine up immediately, it will end up saturating the back of your carpet, thereby increasing the chances of damages on it. A general damage is the carpet delamination where the carpet starts to separate from its backing.

spillclose__25496.1413559781.1280.1280If you have a pet, therefore, a moisture proof carpet would be an investment worth making. For example, if you have a large pet with some bladder issues, you would expect a significant amount of urine to go down through your carpet more often. The urine of a large pet can effortlessly soak through a sub-standard pad and into your sub-floor. But with a quality pet-proof carpet, you can easily overcome that because it will protect your rug from any damages.

A smaller pet, on the other hand, may have fewer accidents that may not soak through a carpet pad. This means that if you use a rug pad, the urine would be trapped between it and the carpet, thereby exposing your carpet to more urine damage. Luckily, with the increased ultramodern carpet cleaning techniques, you can have this urine removed even without having to lift your carpet.

Installing a moisture proof carpet pad is definitely a valuable investment as it can keep liquids more contained rather than widespread. However, you should not allow yourself to get confused by the name pet proof as it only repels moisture and does not make urine disappear magically. And since the liquid or urine spilled on your carpet must go somewhere, either into the carpet backing or into the pad, your carpet padding must be installed correctly. Your installer must be a professional so as to ensure that all the gaps are sealed or otherwise your padding will be doomed.

Rug Pads for Oriental Rugs

Most people who live in areas where Oriental rugs are made use pads under their rugs. It is common there for people to enter homes without street shoes. Rug pads prolong the lifespan of rugs. This is because they cushion the rugs from being scratched by the hard floor. The rug pads have been made to absorb the impact of the force which people will exert on it while landing.
